It is difficult to dispute this assertion, at least as far as Silicon Valley is concerned. Most tech investors and other experts Rogers has spoken with this year operate under the assumption that whenever they meet with someone to talk business, the conversation is going to be recorded or transcribed by AI, sometimes without explicit consent from the participants. Today, the most popular choice on the market for recording meetings is Granola AI, alongside a variety of other available options such as Otter AI. Therefore, the timing of Wispr’s expansion from a simple dictation tool into a meeting management resource is considered logical and highly expected under current market circumstances.
How Wispr Flow's Notetaker Works
Wispr's new Notetaker tool connects directly to the user's personal calendar and is capable of listening along during any meeting. Once the conversation is over, the tool uses generative AI to summarize the discussion and connects the summary to a chatbot-style tool. This interface allows users to analyze the context of what was said by asking follow-up questions.
The tool is launching first for Mac laptops, with an expansion to Windows operating systems expected further down the line. The company also offers privacy options for its users: if a user enables "Privacy Mode" on their account, the data generated from their dictations will not be used by Wispr for training AI models. In the initial test conducted by Rogers during his conversation with the CEO, the live transcription appeared highly accurate on the screen, and no obvious errors were visible in the AI-generated summary produced after the meeting ended.
Performance Test of the New Feature
The "ask anything" tool was perceived as the most successful aspect of the new feature. During testing, Rogers wanted to retrieve a specific quote he remembered from the conversation but could not recall exactly when Kothari had said it. He typed in the search query "year of ai notetakers quote," and the Notetaker tool located the requested moment with high accuracy. When Rogers checked the located quote against the original audio recording to verify its accuracy, the AI-transcribed quote matched the audio file perfectly.
Users can adjust and customize the fine details of Wispr’s Notetaker in the settings of the dedicated Mac app. One of the most prominent aspects available in these settings is the ability to extend the maximum meeting recording duration to up to six hours continuously. Kothari explains this change by pointing to the product's historical background: "Wispr had a six-minute time limit earlier. People would start it on and off five times just to capture a 30-minute meeting. We realized we should stop being stupid. This is what people really want Wispr to do."
The Issue of Trust, Privacy, and Legal Requirements
Similar to the tool offered by Granola for capturing meeting transcripts, Wispr's Notetaker transcribes conversations directly on the user’s local device and does not join the meeting as a visible participant. Despite this fact, Kothari emphasizes that users should not use the new Wispr tool secretly, and they must always disclose to other participants when conversations are being recorded and transcribed. This is necessary both for potential legal reasons and out of basic respect for the privacy of other meeting participants.
"We need that to become the norm for everybody. Otherwise, you're going to get a lot of lack of trust that starts to happen," Kothari says. "There are laws that are single-party and multi-party. I think, regardless, it's just a basic trust-setting exercise to just make sure people know." In San Francisco, where Wispr's offices are located, the law requires anyone recording a private conversation to obtain the consent of all participants.
Technology Improvements and Personal Boundaries of Trust
Voice dictation capabilities have rapidly improved in recent years as the underlying AI models have matured. Rogers notes that he frequently finds himself relying on tools like Wispr and its peers in his daily life, whether for organizing academic research paper notes or searching online for updates on the reality TV show Big Brother. He shares that he is constantly talking to his devices and expecting crystal-clear transcripts, despite his tendency to mumble. However, there is a fundamental difference between personal use and shared conversations. Rogers stresses that he does not expect anyone to secretly transcribe his thoughts during a mutual conversation, noting that breaking this trust even once should lead to completely freezing the recording party out of one's social life.
