Why Anthropic Is Pushing US States to Accelerate AI Regulation
Artificial intelligence company Anthropic, currently valued at nearly $1 trillion, is leading a major political push to accelerate and tighten AI safety regulations at the state level in the United States. While the company supported the initial wave of transparency laws in California and New York last year, it now argues those measures are outdated for the most powerful frontier models. Pushing for stricter regulations in states like Illinois and Massachusetts, Anthropic's position has sparked intense debate in Silicon Valley. Critics, including Donald Trump's technology adviser David Sacks, accuse the firm of seeking "regulatory capture" to stifle smaller competitors. However, Anthropic's head of state policy, Cesar Fernandez, defends the strategy, stating that regulations only target large developers with over $500 million in annual revenue to address catastrophic risks.
