As part of this expansion, Google is committing $40 million in AI tokens and cloud services credits for researchers supporting the mission. The investment aims to provide scientists with access to advanced technological tools that will help accelerate the pace of scientific discovery and address complex challenges at an unprecedented scale.
Modern Scientific Challenges and the Role of AI
Scientists today face complex and large-scale challenges, from simulating the intricate dynamics of fusion plasma, through exploring the vast search space of new materials, to deciphering exabytes of data generated by the world’s most advanced experimental facilities. The demands on modern research are unprecedented, and frontier artificial intelligence (Frontier AI) technologies offer a solution that can help address these challenges while accelerating significant scientific discoveries.
Back in December, Google shared its commitment to the White House's Genesis Mission—a national initiative aimed at harnessing AI to double the pace of American scientific discovery within a decade. Since that announcement, Google’s AI division, Google DeepMind (GDM), launched an early access program providing scientific AI tools to all 17 US Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories. Meanwhile, Google’s public sector division (Google Public Sector) demonstrated how Gemini for Government could serve as the technological backbone for the DOE. Now, at the DOE Genesis Mission Summit 2026, Google is expanding its activities with the new financial commitment of $40 million.
The AI Tools Portfolio for Scientific Research
Under the expanded commitment, Google will provide DOE's Genesis Mission awardees with direct, in-kind access to Google DeepMind's portfolio of advanced AI for science tools. The tools included in the program are:
- AlphaEvolve: A Gemini-powered coding and discovery agent used for designing and developing advanced algorithms.
- AlphaFold 3: A dedicated model for predicting the structure and interactions of proteins and other biological molecules.
- AlphaGenome: A tool for understanding how DNA sequence variations, including in the non-coding genome, shape biology and disease.
- WeatherNext: A state-of-the-art family of AI-based weather forecasting models designed for mapping climatic conditions.
- AlphaEarth Foundations: A foundational AI model for mapping and understanding Earth in unprecedented detail.
In addition, Google will provide Gemini for Government licenses (seats) and tokens for one year to tens of thousands of users operating across the DOE National Laboratories' operations, research, and management teams. This secure platform is designed to support the entire spectrum of laboratory work—from the scientific research bench to the administrative management of specialized user facilities serving the entire scientific community—thereby providing a secure and reliable foundation for the Department's operations.
Practical Applications in National Laboratories
The practical impact of the Genesis Mission is already being demonstrated on the ground across the US national laboratory system.
At Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), senior scientist Dr. Henry Kvinge is using AlphaEvolve to map massive mathematical systems that are too complex for manual analysis by humans. The AI tool automatically uncovers hidden connections, fast-tracking discoveries that would typically require years of manual research. Dr. Kvinge explained the importance of this technology: "Modern math relies on abstraction, but combinatorics offers concrete models that make complex geometry and algebra easier to grasp. We’ve found that systems like AlphaEvolve are perfect for this search. By leveraging the broad mathematical knowledge of LLMs, we can automate the exploration of countless angles. We’re still experimenting, but the discoveries are already shaping our future research."
At the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), researchers are using Gemini to fundamentally change how they interact with physical laboratory hardware. Dr. Steven R. Spurgeon, a senior materials data scientist at NLR, leads a pioneering program in autonomous materials discovery. Dr. Spurgeon remarked on the collaboration: "Our collaboration has allowed us to build an autonomous experimentation capability. By deploying Gemini in our instruments, we cut microscope calibration time from over 90 minutes to about 13 minutes (eight times faster) and reduced the manual steps needed to focus an image from as many as 50 down to two. That's time and attention we've given back to the science itself, enabling genuinely autonomous workflows that observe, reason, and decide in real time. This has helped us explore parts of the material design space we simply could not have reached through manual operation alone."
