According to an exclusive report by technology journalist Jagmeet Singh on TechCrunch, the AI-powered code-testing startup Blacksmith has registered an exceptionally significant surge in its valuation over a period of less than one year. The company has successfully closed a new $45 million funding round, which is designed to enable it to capitalize on the massive shift currently taking place within the software development landscape. In this rapidly changing ecosystem, artificial intelligence tools are accelerating code generation to unprecedented speeds, which in turn creates a major, widespread challenge: the critical need to test, review, and validate these massive volumes of newly generated code.
This latest investment round, designated as a Series B, was led by the venture capital firm Peak XV Partners, establishing a market valuation of $550 million for Blacksmith. This represents a monumental leap compared to the company’s valuation of just $60 million when it secured its previous $10 million Series A funding round less than a year ago. Existing investors also participated in this current round, including GV (the venture capital investment arm of Google) and the prominent startup accelerator Y Combinator. With the completion of this new capital injection, the total funding raised by the startup since its founding stands at $58.5 million.
Company Inception and Accelerated Growth in Customer Base
Blacksmith was founded in 2024 with the core mission of helping organizations build, test, and verify software before it is deployed and integrated into active production environments. Currently, the startup serves more than 5,000 customers, counting well-known companies such as Mercury, Supabase, Clerk, Ashby, and Expensify among its active user base. This represents massive and highly accelerated growth compared to its customer base of just over 700 companies less than a year ago, as highlighted by the startup's co-founder and CEO, Aditya Jayaprakash, in an exclusive interview with TechCrunch.
The rapid adoption and growing popularity of AI-powered code-generation tools—such as Cursor, OpenAI’s Codex model, and Anthropic’s Claude Code—have made the process of writing and creating code significantly easier and faster for software engineering teams worldwide. However, the quality and reliability of AI-generated code are by no means guaranteed, and it is crucial to verify that the resulting code is fully functional and free of errors. In his interview, CEO Jayaprakash explained that the process of validating and testing code has remained a major bottleneck in modern software development workflows. This bottleneck has escalated into an even greater challenge today because development teams and individual engineers are producing and writing vastly larger quantities of code than ever before using these automated tools.
From Continuous Integration to an Autonomous AI Coding Agent
In its early days, Blacksmith operated primarily as a cloud provider for continuous integration (CI) workloads. Through this specialized service, the startup assisted businesses and organizations in running their software builds and executing the various tests required to validate code quality and correctness before it is finalized and integrated into production.
Since its inception, however, the company has actively expanded and enhanced the core technological platform it offers to its clients. As part of this strategic expansion, Blacksmith launched a new product named Codesmith. Codesmith is a dedicated AI coding agent designed to automatically repair failed code checks and resolve software tests that fail during the validation and checking processes.
During his interview, CEO Jayaprakash revealed that the company managed to achieve an annualized revenue run rate (ARR) of $10 million when its internal team consisted of just 10 employees. Since that milestone, the startup has expanded its workforce to approximately 30 employees and grown its overall revenue to "tens of millions of dollars." Although Jayaprakash declined to provide a precise, updated figure regarding the startup's current annualized revenue run rate, he did note that some of the company’s largest enterprise customers are currently spending over $1 million annually on its platform.
Fierce Competition in the Code-Testing Market and Future Developments
While the financial performance metrics and rapid customer acquisition point to robust and rapid momentum, Blacksmith is operating in a highly crowded and intensely competitive market. The startup faces stiff competition from a range of major, established players in the software development and continuous integration ecosystem. Key competitors include the widely adopted GitHub Actions, the tool Cursor Automations, as well as native validation and testing features embedded directly within OpenAI’s Codex and Anthropic’s Claude Code.
Beyond these prominent competitors, the market is populated by numerous other startups offering testing solutions, along with AI-driven code-testing services provided by the world's leading cloud giants: Amazon Web Services (AWS) from Amazon, Microsoft Azure from Microsoft, and Google Cloud from Google.
Jayaprakash addressed this high-stakes competitive landscape, stating that his startup competes with these various market players by focusing on two primary differentiators: the speed of testing code and its overall affordability for customers. Looking ahead to the startup's future roadmap, the CEO indicated that Blacksmith plans to expand its product line into a broader, more comprehensive suite of coding and development tools, with the ultimate goal of helping software engineers write, validate, and merge software at a significantly faster pace.
